Q&A with AQ 👑 feat. Ellis

Updated: Jun 10, 2020

Welcome back to my blog for Q&A with AQ 👑 (Adulting Queen).

Basically, I just call up my friends and tell them to ask me 5 random questions, then voila you get a blog post and fun facts about me!

Ellis and I met when he began pursuing his master's degree at Florida International University (FIU). Summer 2016 I became his supervisor and the rest is history. There were bumps in the road and I left him mid-semester, but Ellis has grown so much and I'm glad to call him my friend 💕

Let's see what random things Ellis asked....

If you could travel to any period of time, what would it be and why?

AQ- The first thing that popped into my mind was slavery and when MLK, Malcolm X and Rosa Parks were alive. I don’t necessarily want to live through this I just want to watch and see what was happening. But also, going to back to see how my grandparents grew up.

Ellis- I’d go back to when my Nana grew up. It was a time when lighter skin was more favorable than darker skin. That was always interesting to me and I'd also want to go back to this time because it’s my Nana.

How did you know when you started to adult?

AQ- Ohh that’s a good one! I think moving to Miami in July 2015 and finishing grad school solidified I’m adulting. I learned how to save money, started paying back my student loans and moved thousands of miles away from home to somewhere I had never even been.

Ellis- I don’t think that is was even grad school or my 1st job honestly. I was an adult but I don’t feel I was adulting. Even though we live on campus, I learned I need to make my apartment into a home and I get excited over very very weird things. I have a favorite washer and dryer in the laundry room that are the only machines I use. I got excited over a bathroom set I bought. I always get excited when my credit score goes up.

Thinking back to your undergrad days would you do anything differently?

AQ- That’s a hard question. I had an amazing and memorable undergrad experience that led me to my career and meeting my closest friends turned family. *thinks for a moment* I would have done better in classes. I graduated with under a 3.0 GPA. I did not work as hard as I could have, I did not like studying, I slept through classes. To all my students reading this, do better than I did! Also, college is not what not what they portray on these movies so don’t go in thinking it’ll be like Love & Basketball, Stomp the Yard, Drumline, etc.

Ellis- I honestly think I would have stuck with my choice in changing my major to theater performance. I had an advisor tell me I wouldn’t make any money so he wouldn’t sign off on changing my major to theater performance from business management. I don’t regret my decision now, but that moment was really impactful for me.

What is the first brunch place you’re going to go to after Covid-19 is done?

AQ- ALL OF THEMMM!!! Lol, but I definitely would enjoy a nice The Park at 14th in DC or Mojave in Queens. Really anything with some good music and bottomless drinks.

Ellis- Wherever you’re going for brunch is where I’m going lol. But in my local area I’d go to Golf and Social in Philadelphia. I haven't been but I’ve heard good things.

What is one thing people misinterpret about you?

AQ- My tone, mostly by my students. Also, that I have it all together but I don’t. I just don’t express my losses as much as I do my wins.

Ellis- People think that I’ve always had it all together but they don’t know the struggles I’ve had to go through to get here. People also tell me my face isn’t that inviting (aka RBF), I don’t feel like I have that though. 🤷🏽‍♂️
